Pocono Downs To Lower Takeout On Superfecta And Trifecta Wagering

Pocono Downs will be lowering its takeout on superfecta and trifecta wagers beginning Monday, August 2, pending approval by the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission

.

The promotion of lowering the takeout percentage from 35 to 25 per cent on both exotic wagers will last through the end of the 2010 harness racing season.

“We’re going to experiment with the new takeout ratio,” said Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs Vice President of Racing Dale Rapson. “Our fans have been asking that we do so in order that they collect more on those winning tickets.

“It will be watched closely and we’ll take a look at our numbers following our last day of racing in November. We’re going to see what impact the takeout reduction will have on our live racing handle.

“I’m hoping that our move will be enthusiastically accepted by our fans here at the main track and at our off-track wagering sites along with all of our simulcast outlets throughout North America.”

It’s about time Pocono Downs joined the rest of the racing industry and lowered their triactor track takeout to the industry norm of 25 per cent. The racetrack executives at Pocono Downs need to sit down at a poker table and watch the house take 35 per cent of each hand played. They will be lucky to play 4 of 5 hands before every participant is broke and all the money has disappeared to the house. This move should not be an experiment as all they are doing is dropping their track takeout to the industry norm of 25 per cent. Moreover, it amazes me that Pocono track executives have not figured out the sustainability of 35 per cent takeouts is impossible if you want you're track pari mutuel pool size to grow over time. Ultimately, at least for this year's 2010 Breeder's Crown all the bettor's will get a fair shake at Pocono.

A 35% or 25% takeout makes sports gamblers sick. It is routine to find single sports wagering possibilities in Vegas and similar venues for less than 5%, plus rebates to volume customers. Congrats to Pocono for doing something that others tracks don't even attempt but it won't be enough!
