Teaching Troubled Kids Horse Sense
One of Winston Churchill's famous quotes states that "There's something about the outside of a horse that's good for the inside of a man." A police chief in Prince Edward Island is proving that works with people of any age, or any background
.
On today's episode of Trot Radio, Norm Borg talks to Charlottetown Police Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan about his program that links troubled youths with standardbred horses.
"Several years ago the police service here started a pilot program...we now house in our building a youth intervention worker. And rather than these kids that we deal with, putting them through the court system, we have this diversionary program. It allows us to engage with the youth and keep the youth out of the court system and maybe identify some underlying issues these kids may have."
