Record Day At Alberta Downs
It was a day of speed at Alberta Downs on Tuesday thanks to a pair of record performances
by three-year-old pacers.
Light The Board lived up to his name when he matched the one-mile oval’s standard for colts. Sent off at 32-1, he toured the strip in 1:59.1 and matched the May 2, 2009 track record set by Promised Rocket.
In rein to trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt, who co-owns the son of Camystic-Beach Lightning with Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, AB, Light The Board sat a pocket trip throughout the mile before sprinting home in a :27-second clip en route to the two-length tally over Mighty Dynamo. Northern Bear was third.
Barona Ice erased the record for geldings when he sprinted to a 1:55.4 score, which chopped four-fifth’s of a second off My Candidate’s former mark of 1:56.3.
The son of Freedoms Pass-Vanessa Hall brushed to the lead shortly past the mid-way point for driver Bill Tainsh, Jr., and then opened up to win by close to nine lengths over Outlaw Wild Thing. Third prize went to Tace Of Red.
Doug Stout conditions the homebred for Barona Yearlings of Spruce Grove, AB. The youngster is 3-for-10 lifetime with earnings in excess of $23,000.
Later on the same program, Neal Diamonique rallied to win the $10,000 Open Pace in 1:55.1 for the team of driver J.F. Gagne and trainer Lance Ward. The five-year-old son of Real Desire sat third most of the way before uncorking a lethal final quarter clocked in :26 seconds en route to posting the one-length decision in 1:55.1. Wrangler Hitech was next best and Pulse N finished third.
Edward Dhoedt of Edmonton and Ernest Greenwood of St. Albert, AB share ownership on the 15-time winner, who is quickly closing in on $300,000 in career earnings.
