Wagering To Help Balance The Budget?

In the face of a budget shortfall in Forsyth County, North Carolina, the county’s commissioners have proposed pari-mutuel wagering as the best solution to raise an estimated $8 million annually

.

"What pari-mutuel betting would do for our county is bring in an estimated $8 million annually just in Forsyth County," said Commissioner Dave Plyler in article on WXII12.com. "With that $8 million, we could take care of schools. We could take care of Tanglewood, and probably have money left over to take care of other needs.”

According to the report, Forsyth County commissioners have proposed to build a track at Tanglewood or the nearby fairgrounds, which would need unanimous support from all nine members of the local legislative delegation to move on this.

"Our reception in Raleigh from Democrats was, 'Let's go for it. Best thing we ever heard of,'" Plyler said. "From the Republican side, 'No,' and one even said, 'Hell, no.'"
