San Pail Repeats In Open Trot
After strutting his stuff on the front-end en route to an impressive win in last Monday’s Open Trot at Woodbine Racetrack, driver Randy Waples opted for a different approach but got the same result
in this week’s top class for trotters.
San Pail, who was voted Canada’s Older Trotting Horse of the Year in 2009, settled into the pocket in the early going while Define The World charged to the lead for driver Paul MacDonell and served up an opening quarter of :27.2. A parked out Rose Run Hooligan prompted Define The World to the mid-way point in :55.4 before being put away as the field moved into the final turn.
Chick N Tell made a bold three-wide move around the final turn to get around Rose Run Hooligan and get after Define The World, who held onto a narrow lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:24.4. San Pail, in the meantime, was still lurking in the two-hole for driver Randy Waples.
Define The World and Chick N Tell continued their battle as the field swung into the stretch, and Waples maneuvered San Pail off the rail and into the center of the racetrack to join them. A :27.4 final quarter was more than enough for San Pail to track down Define The World en route to the 1:53 decision. Chick N Tell rounded out the top three.
Trainer Rod Hughes, who co-owns the superstar square gaiter with breeder Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, ON, watched the six-year-old son of San Pellegrino improved his 2010 record to 3-1-0 in four appearances with the win. It was the trotter’s 25th lifetime tally, and the lion’s share of the purse lifted his lifetime earnings to $1,132,465.
