Doonbeg’s Bro A Winner

Glashedy turned in an impressive maiden-breaking victory at Woodbine Racetrack on Monday evening for partners Clay and Scott Horner, who also had the privilege of racing the colt’s high profile brother, Doonbeg

.

Named after a rock island near Ireland, Glashedy entered tonight’s assignment with three consecutive off-the-board finishes at Flamboro Downs. Trainer Ron O’Neill gave the three-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover-St Mattricks Way a taste of the big track for the first time, and he responded with a solid off-the-pace tally.

Glashedy was positioned seventh at the quarter pole and half-mile markers before advancing to be sixth on the rim as the field hit the three-quarter pole in 1:25.3. Paul MacDonell swung the pacer off cover in the lane, and despite racing into a stiff headwind Glashedy kicked home in :29.3 en route to the 1:56.1 victory.

“He was a little intimidated by all the things that go on here at Woodbine,” said driver Paul MacDonell. “But he had a nice kick on the end of the mile tonight. The wind was strong coming into the stretch, but he went through it. I hope he develops the late kick that Doonbeg had. We’ll see what starts down the road bring.”
