Lubbock Upsets In Hiram Woodruff
An opportunistic Lubbock took advantage of a costly miscue in the stretch by race favourite The Chancellor in Thursday’s lone division of the Hiram Woodruff Series
at the Meadowlands.
Ron Pierce engineered the 8-1 upset with Lubbock, who extended his win streak to four-in-a-row for trainer Nat Varty and owner Joseph Fanelli of Wayne, PA.
Technicallybroadway rolled the field to the quarter pole in :28 seconds before giving way to a backstretch-brushing Lubbock. It was a short-lived lead for the eventual winner, however, as The Chancellor surged past that foe and shortly past the mid-way point in :56.4. The Chancellor was on the hook for the three-quarter clocking of 1:25.1 and appeared to be well on his way to a winning effort until he made a sudden break halfway down the lane.
The Chancellor’s bad fortune was Ron Pierce’s good fortune, as he reclaimed the lead with Lubbock and moved away to win in 1:54.2. The Chancellor regained his gait and re-rallied to save the runner-up award. Third prize went to Mr Cantab.
Lubbock, a five-year-old son of Angus Hall, improved his 2010 record to 6-2-1 in just 11 attempts while pushing his seasonal earnings to $49,690 in the process. To date, the gelding has stashed away $113,810.
