New Voice At Alberta Downs
ASHA racing manager Fred Gillis has confirmed that Murray Slough will be the voice of harness racing at Alberta Downs this season
. Formerly the voice of Stampede Park in Calgary, Slough steps back into the announcer's booth on May 8 in Lacombe.
"The top of the stretch is FAR away," said Slough, who took a tour of Alberta Downs - Canada's only one-mile harness racing track - on Good Friday. "And the three-quarter (mark) is basically at the top of the stretch, so that is a bit different.
"The backside, of course, is farther away too. And I have never used binoculars in my life to call a race, but I don't think I will have to at Alberta Downs either."
Sugar Doyle called Year 1 at the Bobby Allen-operated facility. But with Doyle calling the thoroughbreds in Edmonton this summer, Slough gets back in the announcing business. "It feels great to be back and hopefully everyone will be patient with me if I am a tad rusty at the start," continued Slough.
