The win streak is now six-in-a-row and counting for El Bucanero, who held on for a narrow score in Thursday’s second race at Western Fair Raceway for the father/son duo of Walter and Michael Whelan

Trained by Walter and driven by Michael, El Bucanero parked past the quarter pole in :29.1 before finding the lead but once he cleared the veteran wasn’t about to let anyone go by. He hit the half in 1:00.2 and buzzed by the three-quarter pole in 1:30.4 before stepping home in :31.2 to seal the deal by three-quarters of a length in 2:02.1. R L Patricia was next best, and third prize went to Jayportlookatme.

El Bucanero, who was sent off as the 3-5 favourite in the claiming event, is owned by Richard and Elaine Feallock of Owen Sound, ON. The gelded son of San Pellegrino, who is now 5-for-5 this season, is a 13-time winner in just 27 lifetime starts.
