Numbers In From Reduced Turfway Meet
Thoroughbred racetrack Turfway Park hosted a reduced winter meet from January 1, 2010 to March 28, 2010 which saw its schedule of live race dates reduced to three or four compared to the five-day-a-week schedule it had
previously offered.
According to an article by courier-journal.com, the meet produced higher betting averages and bigger average field sizes at the Kentucky track, although overall handle fell.
Turfway's daily on-track handle rose 4.2 per cent to $118,035, while its daily all-sources handle rose 11.5 per cent to $2 million. The report also states that the average bet on Turfway from out of state sources increased 14.1 per cent.
In 2009, Turfway hosted 619 races over the course of 62 dates. During its 2010 winter meet, the track hosted 435 races over the course of 45 dates.
The 2010 winter meet saw Turfway's total on-track handle ($5.3 million) fall 24.3 per cent. The meet also saw its all-sources betting ($91.9 million) decrease by 19.1 per cent.
