Swift Ally Strikes Again
Swift Ally ($12.70) unleashed a :26.3 closing kick on a frigid Friday night (Jan. 7) at Woodbine Mohawk Park to take the featured $24,000 conditioned distaff pace — and record her second consecutive win in the act.
Trevor Henry situated Swift Ally just off :28.2 first quarter speed, landing in third as lukewarm 5-2 favourite Newsday and Doug McNair controlled a well-measured pace. After Newsday reined the half back to :58.1, Western Wish began a first-over ascent through the far turn and Swift Ally found herself locked in nearing three-quarters in 1:27.2 — but room availed soon after the compact six-mare field turned for home.
With Majestic Virgin angling out of the pocket, Western Wish striding to a mid-stretch lead, and Newsday flagging, Henry found plenty of room to guide Swift Ally up the pegs and into the lead at the sixteenth pole en route to a 1-1/2-length win in 1:54.3. Majestic Virgin lifted around her Carmen Auciello stablemate Western Wish to narrowly claim second; Newsday faded to fourth.
Trainer Gregg McNair shares ownership in Swift Ally with Ian Fleming. The homebred Big Jim mare, a multiple Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots winner earlier in her career, now has amassed 11 lifetime wins to date.
