Coleman On Gold Cup & Saucer, Sportswriter
Three-time O'Brien Award winning trainer Casie Coleman will be making her first trip to Prince Edward Island next week, and she might even be sending a horse or two to the Island's signature race
- the Gold Cup & Saucer.
In today's Guardian, Coleman tells Nicholas Oakes that she's excited to make the trek east for next weekend's P.E.I. Standardbred Horse Owner’s Association banquet and a return trip in the summer for Old Home Week could be in the cards.
“Every year I say I’m going to bring something and I always want to bring something for the Gold Cup and Saucer, but I never do. It’s just so busy that time of year.”
Lucky Man, Wholly Louy, Legal Litigator and Wildmotion are all possible Coleman-trained entrants for the race.
Coleman also touched on the decision to ask Brian Sears to drive Sportswriter in 2010, replacing former driver Mark MacDonald
“It was a shock to me when it was brought up to me that, that was what they were looking at. It’s nothing against Mark. I hate that it happened to Mark, he made us $800,000 and got us a world champion colt. If all [of] Sportswriter’s races were in Ontario we wouldn’t even be talking about this.”
Coleman also indicated that owner Steve Calhoun has already named MacDonald as the first choice on his five two-year-olds in training.

Mark did an excellent job with Sportswriter and could only be described as a top driver on any circuit. Owners pay the bills but these kinds of decisions have a way of coming back to haunt you.
