Carl MacArthur Passes

Former Standardbred trainer and driver Carl MacArthur of Brampton, Ont. passed away on Saturday, Dec. 25 at his home with family. He was 87.

Carl is now reunited with his dear parents Lily and Gordon, brothers Earl, Jack and sister Shirley. Carl was the third of four children and the last surviving. Carl was the loving husband of Helen MacArthur (nee Stewart) with whom he spent 66 wonderful years. He was the cherished father of Lyle (Linda Wellwood), Leigh, Darryl (Margo), Carl (Monique) and daughter-in-law Patti. Carl will forever be the devoted grandpa of Nicole, Adam, Shannon, Shaylene, Jayden, Blake and Dylan. He was the much loved brother-in-law of Flora, Jeanette and Warren Silverthorne.

Carl loved and cherished his family and was a highly regarded horseman, respected and admired for his expertise and love of Standardbred horses. He was recognized with many industry awards and features in industry publications for his driving and, in later years, training accomplishments with horses like Silkys Bunny, Worth More, Springtop, Arts Secret and his most beloved Southwind Madonna.

Following retirement, he stayed connected to the industry through his son Lyle where he continued to advise and consult when called upon. It was a given that horse racing would be found on the family room TV. While highly respected, Carl was of humble roots and was always happy to share advice or lend a helping hand.

Outside of horses, Carl took pride in his yard where he could often be found tending to his collection of garden lights on many summer afternoons. A truly remarkable man, Carl will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in loving memory of Carl to Covenant House – Toronto would be appreciated by the family.

Considering the current global pandemic with the present restrictions in place for group gatherings, attendance at the funeral home has been restricted. As a result, the visitation and funeral will be a private family service. The funeral service for Carl will be live streamed and that video stream will commence at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Carl MacArthur.

R.I.P. Carl!!! You were a wonderful, kind human being !!!

I just got a call from Darell Dickieson telling me about Carl passing away. Iii remember Carl from the early 70s when all 3 of us trained at the woodbridge fairgrounds and remember carl as a friend and a really good guy who went on to develop some great horses. After moving back to PEI I followed his and lyles career and happy to see both do well. I would now like to send condolences to all family members especially lyle who was the only other family member i knew back then. I'd like to make it from both darell and I...
