Preferred Grand Slam For Perfetto
Make it four straight scores and counting for Perfetto in the Preferred ranks at Woodbine Mohawk Park thanks to his gate-to-wire triumph in Monday evening’s main event for trotters.
Handicapped with the outside post in the group of nine, Perfetto shot to the top for trainer/driver Dagfin Henriksen and rolled the field through fractions of :28, :56.4 and 1:24.2 before kicking into overdrive. The gelding stormed home in :28.2 to win by 3-1/4 over pocket-sitting Oney Hall. Royalty Deal rallied from far back to finish third.
The six-year-old son of Majestic Son-Perfect Prelude notched his seventh win of the year and the 23rd of his career for owner Gerald Haggerty of Camden East, ON. The $17,000 payday lifted his seasonal bankroll over $250,000 while pushing his lifetime total to $650.416.
Monday’s card also featured six divisions in the opening leg of the Pop Up Series – one for conditioned claiming pacers and one for horses that were non winners of $30,000 in 2021.
The Shining struck first winning his $14,000 assignment versus conditioned claiming foes in 1:55 for the tandem of driver Doug McNair and trainer Carmen Auciello.
The three-year-old son of Custard The Dragon-Shes Shiny worked first-over in the back-half of the mile and used a :29.3 closing quarter to seal the deal by three-quarters of a length over Always Been Crazy.
Sent off as the even-money favourite, the gelding picked up his fifth win of the season and the sixth of his career. The winner of $38,275 is owned by Steve Mihalic and Tony Valentini.
It was one of three wins on the Monday card for trainer Carmen Auciello. He also clicked with Intrigued Again (1:53.2) and Goldinthebadlands (1:53.2).
Ricottabkiddinme pulled off a 21-1 stunner thanks to his rallying score in the second division for driver Anthony Haughan and trainer Meg Crone.
The three-year-old son of Betterthancheddar-Freedom Away caught cover in the backstretch before losing cover and going first up around the final turn. He then kicked home in :30.1 to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Melody Maker in 1:56.1. Little Willy came on strong to finish third.
Hutt Racing Stable of Malvern, PA owns the sophomore who improved his 2021 record to 4-2-1 from 20 assignments. The victory pushed his lifetime earnings to $24,813.
Just Plain Needy went to the front and didn’t look back en route to a 1:53.2 triumph in the third and final division.
Doug McNair rolled the four-year-old son of Warrawee Needy-Rose C through fractions of :27.2, :56.2 and 1:24.4 before finishing off the competition with a :28.3 closing quarter. He won by 9-1/4 lengths over Dusty Lane Morgan. Third prize was earned by Late Night Dealer.
Trainer Jim Ellis co-owns the homebred with Kenny Ellis and Pep Moretti. The gelding now owns a 3-2-5 record from 26 starts this season. The four-time winner lifted his lifetime earnings to $32,827 with the win.
Guinness Panic was a wire-to-wire winner in the first division for now-winners of $30,000 in 2021. He did so for driver Jody Jamieson and trainer Paul Cameron.
Jamieson hustled the five-year-old son of Sunshine Beach to the top from Post 6 and together they sliced out splits of :28.4, :56.4 and 1:25 before sprinting home in :28.4 to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Champagne Phil in 1:53.4. Race favourite Machdavid was third.
Jamieson and Cameron share ownership on the gelding with Jayme Cameron of Guelph, ON. The 11-time winner now owns a 3-11-1 record this season from 24 trips to the track. He’s stashed away $83,254 to date.
Play Jet Ray had a front-end mission in the second division, and the aggressive approach paid dividends for the gelding.
Austin Sorrie had him on top through fractions of :27.2, :56 and 1:24.2 before using a :29.1 kicker to win by 3-1/2 lengths over Saratoga Blue Chip in 1:53.3. Taking home the show dough was No Bettor Joy.
Julie Robinson trains the six-year-old son of Shadow Play-Woes Jet Filly for Klein Racing Stables LLC of West Bloomfield, MI. The win was just his second of the season, but is pushed his lifetime win total to 18. The lion’s share of the purse helped his overall cash stash climb to $273,953.
Arukidinme Cabbie also went wire to wire in the final division for driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Ashley Lendvoy.
Filion charged to the top with the gelding who proceeded to knife out panels of :28, :57.2 and 1:25.2 before skipping home in :28.3 to win by a length over Capitano Italiano and Legal Bettor.
Gino Toscani of Mount Hope, ON owns the six-year-old son of Big Jim-Arukiddenme who now boasts a 3-2-2 record from 32 trips to the track this year. The 10-time winner has potted earnings of $143,948 so far his career.
