A double dose of Preferred events went postward Thursday evening at Flamboro Downs, with Saulsbrook Jessie topping distaffers and veteran trotter Wild And Crazy Guy winning a nail biter.
Saulsbrook Jessie went to the front and didn’t look back in the $13,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 for Team MacDonald.
Brett MacDonald powered to the lead from Post 3 with the Ron MacDonald trainee, and after leading through panels of :28.2, :58 and 1:26.4 she used a :29.2 closing quarter to win by a head over Custard Lite in 1:56.1. Cousin Mary took home the bronze medal.
Ed Gorc of Sudbury, ON owns the five-year-old daughter of Big Jim-Atlanta Girl who won for the sixth time this season and for the 17th time in her career. She’s now stashed away more than $165,000 in lifetime earnings.
Wild And Crazy Guy made it back-to-back wins in the $13,000 Preferred 2 for trotters, and he needed almost every inch of the stretch drive to do it for trainer/driver Martin Lachance.
The 10-year-old son of Crazed-My Babys Momma worked his way into the pocket early and wound up stalking leader Power And Grace through fractions of :28.1, :58.4 and 1:28.1 before going on the attack. The gelding found clearance and kicked home in :30 to prevail by a neck over Power And Grace in 1:58.2. Gold Edition, who did the first-over work in the back-half of the mile, was third.
Sent off as the 9-5 favourite, Wild And Crazy Guy bettered his 2021 record to 8-2-1 from 28 starts with the victory. It was the 50th lifetime triumph for the career winner of $681,164. He is owned by Jean Brunet and Ted Gewertz.
Earlier on the card a mishap occurred when Watch My Speed (Ryan Desroche) and Siboney (Natasha Day) hooked wheels in the first turn of Race 7. According to the AGCO Judges’ report, Day was unseated but got up right away and was able to hold onto her horse and the race was able to continue without issue.
