Marfisi Students Sweep Preferreds
A set of Preferred events highlighted Thursday evening’s card of racing at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and it was the Duane Marfisi-trained tandem of Chiefs Beach and Conquest AS taking care of business.
Chiefs Beach blasted to the lead from Post 7 for driver Marc St. Louis, Jr. and made every pole a winning one en route to the 1:55 decision.
The 6-5 favourite sailed through splits of :27.2, :57.1 and 1:25.1 before kicking home in :29.4 to win by five lengths over Homey Joe. Third prize was earned by Racemup.
Duane Marfisi trains the five-year-old son of Sunshine Beach-Todaysyourluckyday for owner Percy Elkins of Milton, ON. The win was the fifth of the season and the eighth to date for the career winner of $95,576.
Conquest AS went to the front and didn’t look back en route to a 1:59.2 score in the $10,000 Preferred 3 for trotters.
Marc St. Louis, Jr. hustled the four-year-old son of Conway Hall-Cordele AS to the lead from Post 1 and together they sped through fractions of :29.1, :59.4 and 1:28.1 before coasting home in :31.1 to win by 4-1/2 lengths over Scene A Magician. Katch Kanna took home third prize in the six-horse affair.
Sent off as the 3-2 favourite, Conquest AS posted his fourth win of the season from 29 starts while pushing his lifetime win total to 13 with the triumph. The career winner of $141,618, who also hangs his harness bag in the barn of trainer Duane Marfisi, is owned by Roy Sproxton, Harbhajan Singh Dillon, Darryl Kaplan and Green And Gold Ltd.
