Jimmyachance Sparkles In Millbank
Jimmyachance ($6.50) turned in the most visually impressive performance thus far in the Robert Millbank Memorial Stakes, for rookie pacing colts and geldings at Fraser Downs, by way of his 9-1/4-length win in his $15,000 third-round preliminary event on Wednesday night (Nov. 3).
The Big Jim gelding became a two-time preliminary winner after pulling the pocket up the backstretch and sprinting clear of A Dudes Promise through the final turn to capture a new lifetime mark of 1:56.2 despite sloppy going. A Dudes Promise held second over 1-2 favourite Ladner Lad, who recovered from an early break to finish third in the six-horse field.
Brandon Campbell drove four-time winner Jimmyachance for trainer Dennis Johnston, who shares ownership with Bill Pambrun.
While the earlier Robert Millbank division went over a full second slower, it did see Joe Rich ($2.80) complete a sweep of his preliminary rounds in the series, rallying from yet another pocket trip and evading a late charge from Sammy Santana to win in 1:57.4. Campbell steered the son of Custard The Dragon to his fourth career victory for trainer Jim Marino, who shares ownership with the J J J Stables and Paul Sanders.
On the ladies' side of the docket, in the third round of the Betty Millbank Memorial, Ashley Ederer's Shes Bodacious ($14.20) took top honours with a maiden-breaking 1:58.3 score. David Kelly sent the daughter of Custard The Dragon on a front-pacing mission, rating a 1:00.1 half before extending her lead to as much as seven lengths through three-quarters in 1:28.3 and holding the late rally of 1-5 favourite Shoot The Whiskey 1-1/4 lengths at bay.
Memum Knowsnothing ($4.00) rolled to her second series win in the other division, brushing powerfully to the lead up the backstretch and evading Hazels Wildling by a length in 1:59.2. Glenn White drove the daughter of Custard The Dragon for trainer Rick White, who shares ownership with Janet White and Wayne Foster.
The $75,000 Millbank Memorial Finals are slated for next Thursday's (Nov. 11) B.C. Breeders Classic Day card.
In the sub-featured $10,000 event for pacing mares, the Shale Stables' Moosette ($4.10) passed all four of her rivals to register her second straight win over Rockin Mystery. Campbell and Marino again teamed up with the four-year-old daughter of Hes Watching, who sustained an uncovered push up the backstretch before reeling in pacesetter Rockin Mystery by three-quarters of a length to win in 1:54.1.
Marino ended the night with a training triple and Campbell enjoyed five wins in the race bike.
