‘J J’ Powers Home In London
A second-tier starting spot proved no impediment to Taylor Fritz trainee J J Powerball as he forged a path to land a narrow victory in the $10,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3 Pace at The Raceway at Western Fair District on Tuesday (Nov. 2).
The six-year-old Image Of Dawn gelding settled into fifth while pylon-starter Easton Beach bolted for the front to a :28.2 quarter and odds-on favourite Outlawgrabbingears sat the pocket. Moving to the half in :57.4, driver Austin Sorrie angled J J Powerball off the pegs to grab cover from Racemup, who ground to within a length of the leader marching to three-quarters in 1:26.2. Sorrie sent J J Powerball three wide around the final turn and made steady progress through the lane as Outlawgrabbingears also found room late from the pocket. J J Powerball had enough momentum to hit the front and hold the lead to the finish of a 1:56.1 mile by a nose with Easton Beach back in third and Brave World finishing fourth.
Sorrie co-owns J J Powerball, a winner of two races from 15 starts this season and 17 races from 92 starts overall, with Tammy Collings. He paid $19.50 to win.
