Captain Corey Retired
Reports from Sweden indicate that 2021 Hambletonian winner Captain Corey has been retired and will stand at stud in 2022.
Six weeks ago, trainer Ake Svanstedt revealed that Captain Corey had a broken bone in one of his hooves that would sideline him for his sophomore season but not prevent a return to the racetrack. Further x-rays have revealed additional injury.
"We have decided and come to a joint decision since the latest X-rays showed a crack formation that has not been detected before," Robert Lindström of Midnight Sun Partners told Sweden's Sulkysport. "Thus, it will be breeding for Captain Corey next season" as the new fractures will make it too difficult "to take Captain Corey back to the level we want to see him compete at. It is simply too much risk-taking."
Captain Corey (Googoo Gaagaa - Luv U All) is owned by Svanstedt and Midnight Sun along with S R F Stable and Knutsson Trotting. At the time of his shutdown, Captain Corey topped all North American racehorses with $758,695 in earnings. He retires with a summary of 10-2-0 from 14 career starts, going 5-1-0 both at two and age three, with a bankroll of $1,090,333.
Lindström indicated the group has "received many attractive offers from the largest stud farms" to land Captain Corey as a commercial stallion but a deal and location has yet to be announced.
