Maiden Filly Sparks $100 Win Payout
A rainy night of upsets on Friday (Oct. 29) at Woodbine Mohawk Park was topped by a 53-1 shocker mid-card produced by the maiden-breaking filly Meilleur Fromage.
Making just her second career start in the $15,000 non-winners pace for young fillies, three-year-old pacing filly Meilleur Fromage broke her maiden in a three-way photo finish, producing a $109.30 in payout. The Harry Martin homebred found a seam in deep stretch and bested pocket-sitter Aldrezdup Nowrtgo and the late-closing two-year-old Intothemysticmoon in 1:58 over the 'good' track as part of Bob McClure's driving grand slam.
The 11-race card ended with no winning tickets on the Jackpot Hi-5 wager, boosting the carryover to nearly six figures for Saturday's harness racing card.
Seven-year-old pacing mare Takeyourbreathaway, driven by Trevor Henry, closed off cover to win the Friday night finale at odds of 12-1 in 1:55.3 by 2-3/4 lengths over 21-1 longshot Whistys Paradise and McClure. Greystone Natali O, Shes A Sassy Beach and Wannashakeyourtree completed the top five, with the favourite fading on the front end to finish out of the money.
The $27.10 winner led the 3-2-6-1-10 winning combination for the Jackpot Hi-5, which will now have a carryover of $99,375.96.
A three-time winner on the card, Henry pulled off another upset early evening in the third race when the James Casha-trained trotter King Of Magic closed up the inside from the pocket to beat the fast-closing favourite Angry Eyes to the wire by three-quarters of a length in 1:56 at 21-1 for a $45.30 win payout.
Favourites won four of Friday's 11 races.
