Unity Dominates In Autumn Final
Unity ($3.00) looked the part of a twos-on favourite in the culmination of the Ontario Autumn Series for pacing fillies, rolling to a 1:57.2 score over eight rivals in Wednesday night's (Oct. 27) $27,000 final, held at Flamboro Downs.
After breaking maiden in 1:56.3 in the first round and coming up a neck short by way of a sustained first-over attack in the second round, Unity took full advantage of the pole in the final, keeping to her strengths and taking the short route to the lead through a :27.4 first quarter. From there, driver J Harris gave the two-year-old Hes Watching-Beach Of A Time filly a :59.1 middle-half breather — through which she faced no pressure. She edged clear steadily through the far turn and outpaced 56-1 outsider Skip Across, who rallied out of traffic for second, by 4-1/2 lengths. Pocket rival Sheza Gamer faded to third.
Unity has won twice in nine starts to date and has banked $28,375 for trainer Jack Darling, who also owns and bred the filly.
In the sub-featured $13,000 Preferred 2 Pace, Groovy Joe ($3.60) bested a scratch-reduced field of four, rating a :56 first circuit before fending off pocket rival Long Weekend A to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:52.3. Paul MacKenzie drove the four-year-old Roll With Joe entire for trainer Blake MacIntosh, who shares ownership with the Hutt Racing Stable, Ozzie MacKay and HoofBid Racing.
