'Free Wheeling' To An Autumn Series Score
P C Free Wheeling put forth an apt performance to her name with a coast-to-coast show of force to win the $22,200 Autumn Series Final for two- and three-year-old trotting fillies on Tuesday (Oct. 26) at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Driver Scott Young sent the sophomore Wheeling N Dealin filly for the front and faced little challenge. She posted a :29.2 first quarter, backed the speed to a 1:00.3 half and cruised up the backside as Luna Seelster mounted a first-over bid out of fourth. Her move proved futile to threaten the tempo setter to the final turn as P C Free Wheeling opened her lead through the stretch, striding to a 3-1/2-length win in 2:01.3 over pocket-sitter Denise. Luna Seelster held third while Epic Thrill rode the pylons to take fourth.
Trained by Peter Clements for owner-breeders Amy and Curtis Clements, P C Free Wheeling won her third race from four starts, earning $19,120. She paid $2.20 to win.
Homey Joe jolted off a ground-saving trip to score a narrow victory in the $10,000 Horses & Geldings Preferred 3 later in the card.
Jewels Dragon protected position from the pylon post to lead odds-on favourite Pat Mcgarry A to a :27.3 first quarter. Passionate Prince pulled first over from fourth into a :57.4 half but made just slight gains into the backstretch. Pat Mcgarry A had enough room to launch out of the pocket and press Jewels Dragon to three-quarters in 1:26.3 all while Homey Joe raced in sixth to the inside. With the outer tier losing ground rounding the final turn, Homey Joe saved ground to the inside and angled off the cones to split rivals late, getting a wide-enough opening into the final strides of the mile to edge by Jewels Dragon a half length and stop the clock in 1:56.1. Pembrook Legacy N finished third and Pat Mcgarry A settled for fourth.
Co-owned by trainer Mark MacQuarrie with Angus MacQuarrie, Homey Joe won his fourth race from 21 starts this season and his 19th from 107 overall, earning $183,636. Tyler Borth piloted the seven-year-old Hes Gorgeous stallion who paid $21 to win.
In between the evening’s two features was a $7,500 Seniors Pace, written specifically for horses aged 11 and older. However, the spry legs of the seven-year-old Mach Three gelding Magical Albert landed in the winner’s circle off a coast-to-coast effort. The Anthony Beaton trainee led through a clip of :28.2, :58.3 and 1:28.3 to finish the mile in 1:58.1, two lengths better than Lawmen Reign. Eternal Ruler, sitting the pocket, gave way in third. David Lumsden owns the $3.20 winner.
