Peenie Takes Rideau Preferred

A poor showing in the Valentine’s Day edition of the $14,000 Preferred Pace earned Peenie a mini holiday, and judging by his performance in Sunday’s top class at Rideau Carleton Raceway it looks as though the time off did the pacer a world of good

.

With Denis St. Pierre at the lines Peenie used off-the-pace tactics to take home the top prize for owner/trainer Colin Johnson in this week’s $14,000 Preferred Pace.

The five-year-old son of Real Artist got away third in the early going while Best Show In Town laid down early fractions of :28 and :57.4. Aint No Hearsay came first-over on the leader at the half, and that allowed St. Pierre to tip out and catch second-over cover with Peenie.

Best Show In Town shrugged off the first-over challenge from Aint No Hearsay, who was a length away from the leader at the three-quarter pole in 1:26.1. Peenie was still sitting on cover and race favorite Did It Again was buried in the garden spot. Peenie accelerated off the live cover at the head of the lane and used a :28.4 final frame to propel himself to the 1:55.2 decision. Best Show In Town held on gamely to finish second, with Aint No Hearsay finishing third.

It was the third win of the season for Peenie, who has faced the gate eight times this year. The $7,000 payday bumped this year’s bankroll to $31,575 while his overall cash stash climbed to $273,358.
