So Much More Takes New Mark
Returning to Preferred company after a month of Grand Circuit action, Canada's reigning Champion Older Pacing Mare So Much More trounced Woodbine Mohawk Park's top distaffers with a career-best performance on Friday night (Oct. 1).
After tucking into third through a :27.2 opening quarter while Lit De Rose (Louis-Philippe Roy) and Machnhope (Sylvain Filion) traded turns on the front end, So Much More made her move on the backside and took command at the half-mile mark in :55.3 for driver James MacDonald.
The Don Beatson trainee raced on three-quarters in 1:23 with her rivals chasing in vain as she opened up 2-1/2 lengths down the lane to score in 1:49.2. Lit De Rose won the race for place, holding off Treacherous Reign (Bob McClure), who closed late to finish a half-length back in third.
Sent postward as the overwhelming 2-5 favourite, So Much More paid $2.90 to win.
The five-year-old daughter of Big Jim, who finished third in the Roses Are Red Stakes last month, has won eight of her 20 starts this year while banking $210,261.
Friday's mile was her fastest yet from 39 career wins, knocking one-fifth of a second off her previous mark that she took in a Preferred event in July 2020. The winner of nearly $755,000 lifetime is owned by Don Beatson and partners Kenn Beatson and Cole England.
