Team Campbell Sweeps Century Opens
Mrs Suhwiggins and Dontpokethedragon captured their respective $8,100 Opens during Monday’s 12-race card at Century Downs, and they did so for the productive tandem of driver Brandon Campbell and trainer Michael Campbell.
Mrs Suhwiggins, who was sent off as the 1-2 favourite, went wire-to-wire to capture the Fillies & Mares Open in 1:55.
The five-year-old daughter of Custard The Dragon-Michelles Fury sliced out splits of :28.1, :58.4 and 1:26.4 before using a :28.1 closing panel to seal the deal. She held on to win by a half-length margin over Lady Neigh Neigh. Third prize went to Tajmeallover.
J J J Stables of Prince George, BC owns the 21-time winner. She improved her 2021 record to 4-2-3 from 15 starts with the win while bumping her lifetime earnings $289,088.
For the second straight start Dontpokethedragon came out on top in the Open Pace. The four-year-old son of Custard The Dragon-Rummys Command went gate to wire to score in 1:53.4.
Sent off as the 1-5 choice, the gelding fired to the lead from Post 6 and whizzed through fractions of :28.2, :58.2 and 1:25.3 before kicking home in :28.1 to win by 4-3/4 lengths over Cenalta Express. Taking home the show dough was Crackle N Burn.
Paul Sanders, J J J Stables and Jim Marino share ownership on the gelding who won for the 13th time in his career. His 2021 record reads 8-6-3 from 21 starts and his overall cash stash now sits at $136,930.
Trainer Tom Miller had a productive day thanks to three of his trainees finding their way to victory lane on the card.
Whiplash Smile took the opener for Miller in 1:54.3, and stablemates Oriental Express (Race 5 – 1:57) and Ladies Love Me (Race 12 – 1:56.2) also managed to light the lamp later on the program.
Miller has now racked up 21 wins from just 87 starts this season, and that’s good for purse earnings of close to $90,000 and it’s helped him manufacture a solid UTR of .421.
