Charlottetown To Host P.E.I. Colt Stakes

The oldest Standardbred Stakes race in Canada will continue its historic run on Thursday evening with P.E.I. Colt Stakes action at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The capital track has a 6 p.m. opening post time for the 13-dash program with the marquis event taking place in race three in the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old trotting colts.

Mr Finlay Ridge found the wire first last week and has post three in this week’s $8,950 contest for trainer/driver Clare MacDonald, who co-owns the son of Armbro Barrister with Ian Tate and Arnold Rankin of Nova Scotia. A winner of 10 races from 16 lifetime starts, Mr Finlay Ridge will take on his two greatest foes again this week: A Little Go Go (to be driven by Marc Campbell) has post two while Dusty Lane Milo (Gilles Barrieau) leaves from post four.

Peter MacPhee likes Mr Finlay Ridge to repeat for the win in the Post Time Picks. “We loved the way Mr Finlay Ridge raced last week drafting all the way and reaching up at the very end to get the gold. He gets the same track, same post, same driver and the same result this week.”

Rich Daydreams will attempt knock off her trotting foes in the three-year-old filly division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes in race nine for a $8,950 pot. Kenny Arsenault drives the Wade Peconi-owned trotter from his own stable with post six on the starting gate.

The first division of two-year-old trotting colts is in race two and sees Up Helly AA favoured in the $6,750 split with Ken MacDonald in the driver’s seat from his wife’s Clare MacDonald stable.

The second rookie colt division is in race five as Maritime Breeders winner Mr Miller is the top selection from post five for trainer/driver Corey MacPherson.

The $6,750 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old trot filly division is in race seven with Berts Legacy the top choice off the rail for driver Paul Lanigan and trainer William Lanigan.

The $2,700 Open Rrot rakes the stage in race 11 featuring a dynamic field including Daisy River (Jason Hughes), Cheeky Little Minx (Barrieau) and Freddie (Campbell).
