Tobins Brownie Dominates In Maritimer
Following a pair of commanding stakes wins at Red Shores Charlottetown, Tobins Brownie ($4.40) invaded New Brunswick and delivered a 6-3/4-length drubbing to her eight foes in Saturday's (Sept. 4) $20,270 Maritimer, for three-year-old pacing fillies, at Exhibition Park Raceway.
Trainer/driver David Dowling pointed Tobins Brownie to the lead from post six, and the pair accelerated to force Plain Jane (Marc Campbell), who left from post two, into the pocket through a :28.1 first quarter. From that point on, the daughter of Stonebridge Terror was uncontested, rating middle splits of :58.3 and 1:28 before steadily widening her lead to the end of a 1:57 score, her fourth win in seven starts this year for the partnership of James Quinn, Carl Peterson, Katherine Lakie and Brittany Watts.
Plain Jane finished in a dead heat for second with Doctor Sunshine (Mark Bradley), who sustained a first-over attack out of sixth through the entire second lap.
Tobins Brownie now has amassed 13 wins and over $85,000 in purses in her career.
Dowling took the sub-featured $1,600 Medastar and Boyd Tremere Memorial as well, pushing to the front with Woodmere Ideal Art ($4.30) at the end of a :27.3 first quarter, parrying a challenge from 4-5 favourite Blood Money (Mitchell Downey) through a :57.1 half, and sprinting 5-1/2 lengths clear of that rival to win in 1:57.4. Sifroi Melanson trains the 24-time winner, a six-year-old Articulator gelding, for the Ultimate Stable.
