Huck New Kawartha Downs GM
Well-known long term resident Jim Huck is a seasoned pro who has harness racing in his blood, and Kawartha Downs in his bones. As the new General Manager, Jim is especially thrilled to take the reigns at a time when he'll soon usher in the 50th Anniversary of Kawartha Downs.
Jim emphasizes the positive changes coming to Kawartha Downs. “There are big changes planned for the entertainment complex which currently features horse racing and a casino.
“This has always been a community facility and my goal is to expand on that. It needs to be enjoyed by many more people.”
As a young teen, Huck started out his harness racing career with longtime Kawartha Downs trainer-driver, Doug Hie. Then, after a lengthy career in the corporate world, Jim returned to his real passion in the horse world at Kawartha Downs.
A former horse owner himself, Jim lives and breathes Kawartha Downs. Even when he returned to racing at Kawartha, Jim literally rolled up his sleeves, grooming and jogging horses for many noteworthy participants. To this day he is known as a hands-on guy in the harness racing community.
Huck's rich corporate experience for the Toronto Transit Commission was invaluable as he took on more responsibility at Kawartha. Early on he was the Special Events Coordinator, organizing such events as the Downs' golf tournaments and banquets. He then embraced the opportunity to become the Race Secretary and Supervisor of Harness Racing. It was no surprise to Jim's fan club that he soon became the Manager of Harness Racing. Huck continues to be dedicated to his local community, harness racing, and his loyal harness staff.
“I believe in partnerships, and particularly partnerships with the community,” said Huck. “After all you only get out what you put in. We want to do more for this community.”
