Gillis & Walker Sweep Nova Scotia Stakes
Driver Don Gillis and trainer Walter Walker teamed up to sweep a pair of Nova Scotia Stakes with two-year-old pacing fillies Cougar On A Terr and JJ Scarlett on Friday evening (August 6) at Truro Raceway.
In the first of two $6,594 divisions, the favoured Kinda Like Royalty broke stride into the first turn while a three-wide Cougar On A Terr went on to establish the lead as the 7-2 second choice. She carved out uncontested panels of :29, :59.4 and 1:29.3 en route to victory in 1:59.4, with Whosyourfather following 2-3/4 lengths behind from the pocket. West River Glo, bothered early by the breaker, finished back in third.
Following up on back-to-back Inverness victories, Cougar On A Terr is now three-for-five to start her career. Walker also shares ownership of the Cougar Hall-Toxic Terror filly with Angus Mac Innis of Mabou, N.S. She paid $9.40 to win.
Fresh off her maiden-breaking P.E.I. Colt Stakes victory 12 days ago, JJ Scarlett lowered her mark to 1:57.2 in a 7-1/2-length romp.
After crossing in front of her five foes and setting fractions of :28.3, :58.3 and 1:27.2, she was leading by four lengths at the top of the stretch and nearly double that margin down the lane, with Stonebeachlily chasing in vain from second. Favourite Rhojo Moe edged past JJ Linda late for third prize.
The Tobago Cays-J J Hanna Dawn filly, who paid $6.30 to win as the 2-1 third choice, is now two-for-four for Wwggmacinnismackinnon Stable of Inverness, N.S.
In the $2,000 Winners Over, American Risk ($11) wired the field of top pacers with Todd Trites in the sulky for trainer George Rennison and the local Risky Bizz ownership group. The five-year-old American Ideal gelding held off favourites Imalookertoo and Harry G by three-quarters of a length.
Truro will host live racing on Sunday afternoons for the remainder of the season. First-race post time is 12:45 p.m.
