NASCAR At The Big M? Not So Fast
According to a report, Carl Goldberg, chairman of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, believes that a NASCAR track at the current location of the Meadowlands Racetrack would be a good idea, although Bergen County Freeholders have no such interest
.
An article on northjersey.com quotes Goldberg as saying that the track would "bring people from a 400-mile radius in our macroeconomic condition," and that "bringing NASCAR to the state makes a whole lot of sense."
The article states that local residents have adopted a resolution opposing the creation of the track. The action comes in response to a recent report by New Jersey governor Chris Christie's transition panel regarding gaming, sports and entertainment in the state.
"While the environmental impact is certainly of concern, the quality of life and well-being of the residents is the primary issue," former Rutherford mayor and current Freeholder Bernadette McPherson was quoted as saying.
"Support for NASCAR doesn't come from those of us in South Bergen who spent a good portion of our lives trying to lessen the impact that Teterboro Airport presents and make progress as to what kind of development can take place here to provide jobs and ratables. I don't know of any study that could be done that would change that."

normally if carl goldberg said it was good, i would immediately vote against it as he is clueless when it comes to business.
as it stands, nascar is wrong for other reasons and the fact that south jersey doesn't like it is a joke. grand prix racing was tried for several years and was a big flop. now the amount of racing room, at the sports complex, is down to zero with the giants and jets controlling all of the parking lots.
the question? giants and jets or a long shot bet on nascar. everybody knows the answer. even staten island wouldn't allow nascar.

I find it interesting that New Jersey thinks they can just build a track and tell Nascar to come and replace horse racing!!! They obviously have no idea what they are talking about. As a lifetime participant in harness racing and an avid Nascar fan I can tell you that you don`t just build a track and they jump at the opurtunity to race there. Unlike our sport one body rules everything down to who sells beer in the stands and if you don`t like their rules you don`t get to play period. sounds tough but who is more succesful them or us.. Tracks that don`t play get removed from the schedule and don`t come back.Even if they built a word class race track{you can not run 200 mph race cars over a 1/4 mile oval!!!} and then convinced Nascar to give them a date {they run 36 per year for the Spint cup thats it!} what are they going to do with the facility the rest of the year?? At best they would get 2 dates if they were lucky as thats all Nascars Marquee tracks get {Daytona and Talladega}..Look at Dover Downs they had the Right idea all along,putting the stock car track on the outside of the harness track and letting the facilities co exist.And every time they race there they always mention harness racing on the Fox t.v. broadcast.. Thats good for us!!Lets just stick to horse racing guys and not lose another Important track to a bad idea..
