Defriended Rewrites Summerside Record
Another track record fell on a special stakes Sunday (July 25) at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway featuring Canada’s oldest Standardbred stakes race, the P.E.I. Colt Stakes.
The 15-dash card saw stakes events in every race, with Defriended rewriting the track record for two-year-old fillies by way of a 2:04.1 performance in the day's fourth race. Myles Heffernan Sr. drove the record-setting daughter of Amigo Hall in her $7,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes division for trainer Myles Heffernan Jr., and owner Jackie Heffernan. The mile lowered the former rookie filly record of 2:04.3, which was held jointly by Maple Leaf Spirit and Time Warp.
The $7,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old trot colt splits were won by Mr Miller (Corey MacPherson) in 2:08 and Up Helly AA (Ken MacDonald) in 2:04.4.
The day also saw two-year-old pacers in action, with JJ Scarlett upsetting the first $12,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old filly Gold division in 1:58 in line to Danny Gillis for trainer Walter Walker and the Wwggmacinnismackinon Stable.
Rhojo Moe was upset-minded in the other $12,000 Gold filly split with a 1:59.1 win for driver Marc Campbell, co-owner and trainer Sandy Baird and co-owner The Rhojo Group.
The $6,000 Grassroots filly divisions were won by JJ Linda (Walter Cheverie) in 1:59.4, Smokin Molly (David Dowling) in 2:00.4 and Therealprincess (MacPherson) in 1:58.2.
Fern Hill General continued his perfection in a $12,200 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old pacing colt Gold division with a 1:58.1 win for driver Brodie MacPhee, trainer Earl Smith, and owners Peter Smith and Gerald Morrissey.
St Charlesfireball delivered in his $12,200 Gold division in 1:57.1 for trainer-driver Campbell and owners Ryan and Everett MacLeod.
The $6,000 Grassroots colt divisions were claimed by Woodmere Gaelic (MacPhee) in 1:59, Stash It Away (Campbell) in 2:00.3, and Soul Assassin (Dowling) in 1:57.3.
In three-year-old trotting action, Dusty Lane Milo led at every call to win the $9,200 colt division in 2:02.2 for driver Adam Merner, trainer Melissa Rennie and owner Marsha Knox.
Rich Daydreams won the $9,200 three-year-old filly P.E.I. Colt Stakes division in 2:04 in line to trainer Kenny Arsenault for owner Wade Peconi.
Live racing continues Thursday (July 29) and Saturday (July 31) evenings at Red Shores Charlottetown and Sunday afternoon (Aug. 1) at Red Shores Summerside.
