Miami Hosts Futurity Elims
The Miami Fair had an exciting 10-race card that did not disappoint the crowd on hand. Saturday (July 24) was the first day that fans could attend the races in person since the start of the pandemic.
The half-mile track in Southern Manitoba hosted the eliminations for the Manitoba Standardbred Futurity Finals. The stake race is open to three-year-old colts and fillies and the top four from each elimination will move onto the final on Aug. 21.
In the first elimination, the field of five went for a purse of $5,345. Drivelikeustoleit ($8.00) won in 2:00.4 and earned driver Dean Rey his first win of the season at the Miami Fair. Chase My Dust made the move east to Manitoba, after racing at Century Downs this summer, and finished second. Dawns Night Owl, with Daryl Thiessen in the sulky, was the post-time favourite and rounded the top three. Send Me A Tweet completed the finalists.
The second elimination went for a purse of $5,443 and featured a field of seven. The favourite Filly ($3.20) won for trainer Trevor Williams in time of 2:01.4. Millies Million finished second with Michel Rey in the bike. Cereal Killer rounded the trifecta with Don Howlett driving. Jimmydonedidgood was the fourth-place finisher and will also move on to the finals.
The final race of the day was the $2,350 Open, won by Pure Addition ($5.80) — the only mare in the field — in a time of 2:01.1. She gave trainer Trevor Williams his third win of the day. Daryl Thiessen was in the bike for the mare and picked up his 100th win as a driver. Senga Savanna finished second and ended his win streak at two. The 3/5 favourite Read The Proposal, with Glenn Le Drew in the bike, finished third. Williams' hat trick also included a win earlier in the card by Lisplaced ($3.00).
Miami Fair will head back to post at 3:00 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday, July 31. Leg two of the Golden Boy and Silk Lace stakes will take place along with the Kindergarten Stakes.
