Longshots Abound At Dover Downs
54-1 Waipawa Lad N won the $32,500 Delaware Special/Handicap and 16-1 Victor Vuitton N took the $22,000 Winners-Over pace, two of the President's Day features, at Dover Downs on Monday, February 15
. Winordietrying was Corey Callahan's fourth win, in the $24,000 Four-Year-Old pace.
Brad Hanners and WJ McDougall Racing's Waipawa Lad N followed the cover of dueling leaders Domitian Hanover and Ron Pierce and Proper Respect, with Tim Tetrick, around the final turn then came three-wide to out leg a trio of rivals at the wire in 1:53.3 to win the $32,500 Del. Special/Handicap for his first win of the New Year. The win was Hanners second as the Peter Tritton-conditioned Waipawa Lad N paid $111.40 for a $2 win ticket. Kellys Spur rolled down the passing lane to finish second in front of Domitian Hanover.
One race later, Corey Callahan won his fourth of the day driving Winordietrying to victory in 1:53.3 in the $24,000 Four-Year-Old pace. In his first start since being claimed by Nick Callahan, Winordietrying, an Allamerican Native-Armbro Jillian gelding, won for the third straight time and fourth in his last five outings. Everlasting Pride raced gamely for Ron Pierce to finish second after he raced head-to-head with third-place finisher Yankee Fortysix and Brad Hanners battling for the lead from the backstretch to deep in the lane.
George Dennis pulled 16-1 Victor Vuitton N out of third after the three-quarters and then wore down leader Thats Justice, with Vince Copeland, in deep stretch to score his second straight victory in 1:52.1 in a $22,000 Winners-Over pace. Don Reed and trainer George Wagner own the veteran Dream Away-Paris Affaire gelding. Dollars Bromac N and Ron Pierce were third.
Delivered From Zin became the winningest horse at the meet when Tony Morgan drove the Sealed N Delivered-Zinful gelding to his sixth consecutive victory, pulling away for a 1:53.2 triumph. Joyce Keeler claimed Delivered From Zin out of his last start and lost him this time via a $20,000 claim to Dylan Davis. Night Talker (Ron Pierce) was second. Eviction Notice N (Roger Plante) finished third.
Posting multiple wins were Callahan with four, trainer Dylan Davis with three winners and Tony Morgan, Brad Hanners and Ross Wolfenden along with trainer Josh Green, two each.
