Kerwood Notches 5,000th Win

Tony Kerwood registered his 5,000th driving win when scoring at Running Aces Tuesday (July 6) in Race 10 on the program, piloting his own horse Intrigued Again to his second local win with a 1:56.1 mile.

Kerwood is a native of Toronto, Ont. and has been a top driver in harness racing for more than three decades. He has piloted the winners of more than US$54.3 million during that time. This is the first season at Running Aces for Tony, who also recently completed a successful meet at Cal-Expo before coming out to Minnesota for the summer racing season. Tony had his highest seasonal win total in 1988 when he won 241 races, and his highest seasonal purse total in 1996 when he drove the winners of US$3,717,470.

Parklane Jet (Dean Magee, $9.40) scored a dominating win in the $12,000 Open Handicap Pace, drawing away late to post a 4-1/4-length romp in 1:52.4 for his second win of the season and 13th tally overall. The five-year-old gelding by Jeremes Jet is closing in on $100,000 in career earnings, having $97,503 banked so far. Hoo Nien A was home in second and Elusive Image picked up third in the featured event. The winner is owned by Terrence Smith and trained by Edward Hernandez.

Vickies Vacation (Nick Roland, $3.40) posted her first pari-mutuel win in the $7,100 Two-Year-Old Open Trot in 2:03 with a solid final panel in :29.3. The Banker Volo filly got away in the pocket and then was relegated to third throughout most of the mile before driver Nick Roland angled her into the passing lane in the stretch, and they were able to pass the front runners and draw clear by one length. The winning owners are Jeralene Roland and Vickie Rush, and the winning trainer is Dan Roland.

Drivers Rick Magee, Brian Detgen and Brady Jenson all completed doubles on the card, while trainers Dan Roland and Edward Hernandez also registered doubles on Tuesday night.

The 20-cent Pick-5 wager had a mandatory payout on Tuesday, with $70,132 in new money wagered and $30,113.73 in carryover money for a total pool of $100,245. The Pick-5 sequence yielded no winning favourites and there were seven winning combinations with each ticket paying $12,016.58 for 20 cents.

Nobody was able to solve the Late Pick 4 which has sparked a carryover for Thursday night’s (July 8) Early Pick 4 of $1,943.62. The 50-cent Hi-5 also went unsolved on Tuesday, and there is a carryover of $3,366.34 for the Race 7 Hi-5 on Thursday as well, with first post at 6:05 p.m. (CDT) for the eight-race card.

Congratulations Tony!! I am very proud to say that I rubbed about 500 of those wins when I groomed for Cal Campbell back in the late 80's and early 90's!!

Congrats on 5K!! Great to see you hit the milestone with a home bred. He’s no Kendal Champ but looks like he can put a meal on the table when needed!

Great to see Tony get his 5,000th win. Unknown to a lot of people, Tony spent three days working on the "cushion line" building front seats for Chev's and Pontiac's at the General Motors Car Assembly Plant in Oshawa, Ontario in the early 1970's. I worked right across from Tony, and you could see his heart wasn't in it. I knew him from Kawartha Downs where I groomed for my late friend Ron Luke who was our groupleader on the cushion line. Tony's dad Frank was a supervisor at G.M. and probably thought this job would be something to fall back on if Tony's driving career didn't work out. There were some pretty good young drivers at Kawartha back in those days...Reg Gassien, Gord, and Hall of Famer Doug Brown, and new Hall of Famer Paul MacDonell. I am so glad Tony decided to stick with harness racing. I am proud to say that I worked with this fine harness driver and am glad he has had better luck with horses than he had with a hog ring gun. I travelled to the "Little Brown Jug" with Tony's dad Frank, and Ron Luke to watch Niatross reset the record books, and Frank always was very proud of Tony's accomplishments. Next goal 6,000 Tony.

Congratulations Tony! Nice milestone. Horse looks a little like Andy's Comet.
