'Armycaptin' Clicks In Century Open
Armycaptin Hanover was denied a third consecutive win when he settled for a fourth-place finish in last week’s Open Pace at Century Downs, but he started a new winning streak thanks to his rallying score in Tuesday’s $8,100 main event for male pacers.
Trainer/driver Kelly Hoerdt got away next to last in the five-horse affair while Icy Blue Scooter hustled to the top and carved out first-half fractions of :27.1 and :56.2. Dontpokethedragon advanced first-over on the way to the three-quarter pole, and he actually showed a short lead at that post in 1:24. Armycaptin Hanover was glued to that foe’s cover, and in crunch time Hoerdt then used a :28.2 closing panel to secure the win by 1-1/4 lengths over Dontpokethedragon in 1:52.4. Tiempo Hanover was third.
Armycaptin Hanover, who is owned by Hoerdt and Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, AB, improved his 2021 record to 4-2-1 from eight starts with the win. The victory was the 16th career tally for the winner of $88,822, and the 2,500th career tally for his O'Brien Award winning pilot.
Mrs Suhwiggins was a down the road winner in the $8,100 Fillies & Mares Open Pace for the tandem of driver Michael Hennessy and trainer Michael Campbell.
Sent off as the 8-5 favourite, Mrs Suhwiggins shot to the top from Post 3 and successfully chopped out fractions of :28.2, :58.1 and 1:26.3 before using a :28.3 kicker to win by two lengths over Chase The Ace in 1:55.1. Outlaw Fireball was third.
J J J Stables of Prince George, BC owns the five-year-old daughter of Custard The Dragon-Michelles Fury who won for the 19th time in her career. It was the second win of the 2021 campaigner for the winner of $274,913.
