Red Shores To Mark 135 Years Of Racing

Soccer Hanover wants to be the boss on a special Thursday afternoon (July 1) Canada Day program at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway as the track celebrates 135 years of racing.

The western oval will host a 12-dash program kicking off at 1 p.m. (ADT) on Thursday with the top class lining in Race 11.

Soccer Hanover is the morning-line favourite from post 5 in the $2,900 featured event with Corey MacPherson back aboard the 7-year-old son of Dragon Again. Leith Waite co-owns and trains the 20-time winner for co-owners Les and Spencer Waite. Soccer Hanover was third has last start with Ken Murphy at the lines and won the start previous on June 18 for driver MacPherson.

Moonwriter was the runner-up on that June 18 start and gets post 4 with Marc Campbell at the lines of the Colin Johnson trainee fresh off two weeks' rest. Creepin is installed at 3-1 in the morning line odds from post 3 for trainer-driver David Dowling while looking for the horse’s first win of 2021. Also in the field are Theycallmedude (To be driven by Murphy) and Best To Hurst (Taylor Doyle).

The Backstretch Beat in Thursday’s card has Soccer Hanover pegged as the top choice. They write “Soccer Hanover’s driver MacPherson has won the last three top classes in Prince County, just not always with the same horse. With him back aboard this guy today we think the odds of him grabbing his fourth straight are very high.”

The afternoon will also feature a reenactment of the match race held in 1886 and 2002 at historic Summerside. The 2021 match race will feature Hop Up with Keith Campbell and Windmeredontuworry with driver Lloyd Hannah. The match will be held after Race 5. There will be a special souvenir program, historic photos of memorable races and people on the Race Day broadcast. Customers who tag their ticket on track with the Wild Horses promotion will have a chance to win jackpots worth $135.

The Canada Day Pace goes postward in Race 10 for a $1,800 pot with Galterio Hanover selected on top of the ticket from post 7 for driver Campbell and trainer Earl Watts.

The Jackpot Hi-5 race in the finale is a wide-open affair with Electric Syl the morning-line favourite in the eight-horse field with Gilles Barrieau at the lines for trainer George Rennison. Other contenders include Adventure Luck (Dowling) and Bold N Bad (Jason Hughes).
