Armstrong Triples Up At Rideau
After going winless with his first 42 starters of the season at Rideau Carleton Raceway, Michael Armstrong scored a training hat trick on the Thursday night (June 24) program in the nation's capital.
Armstrong, who won a career-high 24 races in 2020, found the win column with his first starter of the night, Amigo Mio ($10.40), in the third race. The three-year-old Amigo Hall gelding vaulted off cover en route to a 4-1/4-length, 2:00 win over Blogmaster in a $5,500 conditioned trot. Jon Snow ($2.60) gave Armstrong his second winner of the night in the fourth, posting a front-end, 1:55 score over Malvolio in a $4,800 conditioned pace. Angels Kid ($19.50) sprang an 8-1 upset in the eighth, a $6,400 conditioned trot, to complete Armstrong's hat trick, turning aside a stout challenge from Raising Rusty before sprinting clear by 5-1/2 lengths to win in 1:57.
Samuel Fillion drove all three of Armstrong's winners, and added a fourth win on the 11-race program with Mandy Archer trainee Windsong Quincy ($2.90, 1:54.1).
After two victorious qualifiers earlier in June, 90969205 Québec Inc.'s Shotgun Jerry ($2.10) posted a 1:57.1 win in his pari-mutuel debut, besting Girl Scout Cookie by 3-1/2 lengths. Trainer Stéphane Pouliot drove the two-year-old son of Royal Mattjesty.
