Anne Doolin Passes
Anne Charles Doolin of Lexington, Ky. and formerly of Mt. Sterling, Ky., passed away on June 19, 2021 at the age of 61.
Anne was born in Mt. Sterling on September 22, 1959, the daughter of the late Bill and Cricket Charles. She graduated from Montgomery County High School in 1977 and the University of Kentucky in 1981.
Anne’s love of horses combined with her writing skills led her early career to The Meadowlands in New Jersey, Scioto Downs in Columbus, Ohio, and the Red Mile in Lexington. At all three tracks Anne was involved in public relations and track promotions. She continued her relationship with horses and racing by writing freelance articles for various equine publications until her passing.
During the last 20 years of her life in Lexington, Anne was an activist in animal rescue and care. She fostered many dogs and cats and also coordinated the transfer of animals in shelters to permanent homes throughout the state. She was involved in helping people as well and served as President of “Downtown People”, a non-profit organization that feeds a potluck meal every Sunday to those in need. In 2017 she received the January Davies Humanitarian Award, presented by the United States Harness Writers Association for her numerous good works.
In addition to her parents, Anne was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Bess Charles. She is survived by an aunt, Sue Reed, of Lexington. Other survivors include cousins Bert Charles III of Mt. Sterling, Carol Davis, Sara Porter, Kathy Simpson, and Geoff Reed, all of Lexington. Anne is also survived by longtime special friend William Copeland.
Special thanks to Anne’s close friends Theresa Shaffer and Francis Richie who assisted Anne through her extended battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to “Helping Every Animal Rescue and Transport” (HEART); 4698 Kentucky 409, Sandy Hook, KY 41171.
