Frosh Fillies Flood Mohawk Friday
Friday morning's (June 18) qualifying session at Woodbine Mohawk Park was dedicated to two-year-old fillies, and a daughter of Sunshine Beach delivered a second victory in as many tries to date in the morning's most impressive performance.
Six days removed from her 1:59 victorious debut, I Love Ongait turned it up a notch in her second baby race, brushing to the fore into a :59.4 half and striding away steadily through a :28 closing sectional to a 7-1/4-length, 1:56.4 victory. Bob McClure drove the second foal out of So In Love for trainer Dr. Ian Moore and the partnership of the Let It Ride Stables and Bottom Line Racing LLC. Better Double Flip (James MacDonald) closed in :28.2 to finish second over the tiring Bettor Deal.
Prohibition Legal, a full sister to $313,000 winner Fancourt and a half-sister to five other six-figure earners, threw down a :27.2 closing quarter to overcome the cover of Speak Your Mind and win by a widening length in 1:57.2. James MacDonald drove the Millar Farms homebred by Big Jim out of Catch A Wish for trainer Nick Gallucci.
Cheryls Shadow also turned in a 1:57.2 performance, rallying steadily out of midfield to just nab Hollywood Hanover for a successful qualifying debut. Jonathan Drury drove the daughter of Shadow Play and Astrmowin for trainer Carmen Auciello, whose Auciello Stables share ownership with Cheryl Downer, Julia Clark and Amanda Clark.
On the trotting side, Global News took top honours, building on a third-place finish in her debut last Friday with a 1:59.3 score. Jody Jamieson brushed the daughter of Archangel and Going Global from the pocket on the backstretch and maintained 1-1/2 lengths of clearance over Say Something. Trainer Blake MacIntosh shares ownership with the Hutt Racing Stable.
