Cavalry Officer Shows Authority
Cavalry Officer made his first trip to the winner’s circle this year after pulling off a dominate score in the $1,400 Open Handicap Trot on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park

Trainer/driver Marc Campbell sent Cavalry Officer to the lead from Post 3 and never looked back en route to a five and three-quarter length score 2:05.4, with fractions timed in :31, 1:03.3 and 1:35.3. The 5-2 second choice picked up his first win in four outings this year with his front-end victory over favourite Caliban Hanover (Corey MacPherson), who rallied off the cover of third-placer finisher Inscribed (Harold Shepherd) for second.
Cavalry Officer, a five-year-old son of Angus Hall-Bee Sting who has won nine races lifetime and earned $16,326 in purses, is owned by Greenoaks Farm of Mississauga, Ont.
In the $2,400 feature pace, favourite Pans O Silver also went wire-to-wire to prevail by over five lengths notching his first win after finishing second in four previous starts this year. Brian MacPhee directed the nine-year-old son of Pans To Reason-Silverwood Diane through stations of :29.3, :59.3 and 1:29.3 before tripping the teletimer in 1:59.3.
The winner of 43 races and $67,439 lifetime is trained and owned by breeder Alex MacPhee. Yankee Sun (Jason Hughes) finished second over the pocket-sitting Tanks A lot (Gary Chappell).
Agoaltenderbytrade and trainer/driver Mark McKinnon won the first of two 3/4-mile paces by five and a half lengths in 1:32 for local owner John Darte while three-year-old Marching Band broke his maiden with a 1:32.4 effort in the second event for trainer/driver Joseph Hennessey and owner William Andrew of Calgary, Alta.
A pair of 1-1/16 mile paces were also carded on Saturday and they were won by Anthony Beaton’s Aahm Cruisin in 2:10, with Brian MacPhee in the bike for trainer Ambyr MacPhee, and The Tominator in 2:08.4. Corey MacPherson did the driving for trainer Darrell Poulton, who shares ownership with Shelley Gass.
Saturday’s program marked the final card of the season until April 24.
