Hennessey, Deters Sweep Tioga Opens
Driver Wally Hennessey and trainer Mike Deters teamed up to win both $9,000 features on Sunday (May 9) at Tioga Downs, doing so with Rebellious and Burn Notice.
Rebellious ($3.00) proved a repeat winner in the Open Pace.
Rebellious went right to the front and hit the first quarter in :27 before yielding to Ideal Jimmy (Jody Jamieson), who brushed from third to take the lead with a lap to go. Ideal Jimmy led to the half in :56.2 and three-quarters in 1:25.1, but Rebellious pulled the pocket and reclaimed command on the final turn. Rebellious drew off in the stretch, winning by 3-3/4 lengths in 1:52. Caviart Reagan (Braxten Boyd) finished second; Ideal Jimmy had to settle for third.
Rebellious, a seven-year-old gelding by Mach Three, is owned by Joel Warner along with Deters. It was his sixth win this season and the 47th of his career.
Burn Notice ($5.80) hung tough under pressure to capture the Open Trot.
Hennessey and Burn Notice yielded early command to Rose Run Rudi (Jamieson) through a :27.2 first quarter before brushing to the lead in front of the stands and reaching the half in :56.1. BJ Lorado (Boyd) took the first shot, advancing first-over up the backstretch, but Burn Notice pushed him away after reaching three-quarters in 1:25. Burn Notice edged clear by 2-1/4 lengths in the stretch and breezed to an easy win in 1:54.4. Rose Run Rudi won the battle for second over BJ Lorado.
Burn Notice, a six-year-old gelding by Cayenne Turbo, is owned by WHR Trust. It was his fourth win of 2021 and his 17th overall.
