Cash N Chips Capitalizes In Provost
Challenging on the outside when the leader jumped it off, Cash N Chips pounced on the opportunity and went on to capture the $22,250 championship of the Margaret Provost Memorial Trot for three-year-old fillies on Thursday (April 22) at The Meadows.
Treasure Gems K, the 4-5 favourite, was trotting with a clear lead through the final turn when she made an unforced break, leaving only Cash N Chips and the pocket-sitting Wonmyheart Hanover in position to score. Cash N Chips persevered for driver Hunter Myers and downed Wonmyheart Hanover by a half length in a career-best 1:56.1, with Franklin County third.
Steve Bush trains the daughter of Cash Hall-Sugar N Chips and owns with Alvira Fassett.
In the $16,000 Open Handicap Pace, The First Step overcame a tough trip — he was caught outside twice — to prevail in 1:51.3 for driver Ronnie Wrenn, Jr., trainer Ron Burke and owners Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Phillip Collura. Lyons Skipper was a neck back in second while Rock Candy completed the ticket.
The Betterthancheddar-Mery Linny Lee gelding pushed his career bankroll to $193,184 and, in the process, ended the four-race winning streak of his stablemate Windsong Leo, who finished fourth.
Dave Palone and Mike Wilder each piloted three winners on the 13-race card.
Live racing at The Meadows continues Friday (April 23) when the 13-race program features a pair of carryovers — $3,173,33 in the final-race Super Hi-5, $768.68 in the Pick 5 (Race 8). First post is 12:45 p.m. (EDT).
