April's Calendar Photographer
The Heart of Harness Racing April Calendar photographer is Dawn MacInnis of Summerside, P.E.I.
Dawn captured this adoring photo of Four Corners, Dimitri, and Carpandero Hanover at the Weeks’ Homestead in Fredericton, P.E.I.
Dawn decided to try her hand at photographing the races over ten years ago after receiving her very own digital camera, since then, her camera has barely left her hands, and photographing horses has become one of her most beloved hobbies.
“I’ve taken many different types of photos (portrait, scenic, etc.) but nothing makes me happier than taking photos of horses! They are easy to deal with and never dodge the camera when it’s pointed their way.”
MacInnis has deep roots within the industry and has been around the racetrack her entire life.
“I have been attending the races since I was a young child. I would go to the races with my mother to watch my uncles race their horses. Not much has changed! We both still attend the races regularly and have done some traveling within the Maritimes to check out other tracks as well,” explained Dawn.
Although Dawn and her mother have travelled to the different tracks throughout the Maritimes, her hometown track will always be number one in her heart.
“My hometown track in Summerside is my favourite place to be. Though, I do have a great appreciation for all of the matinee tracks on PEI. It’s nice to be able to watch the younger generations honing their craft before they get their license to drive on the main tracks.”
Dawn is looking forward to getting back to the track this summer so she can continue to take photos to add to her “Humans of Harness Racing” Facebook page and finally enjoy in-person racing again!
