Veyron Victorious In London
With a far-turn blitz, Veyron powered to victory in the $13,000 Preferred 2 Handicap Trot on Tuesday (March 16) at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Derf Hanover, the even-money favourite, hustled to the point from post 6 while Power And Grace landed in the pocket and Veyron settled into third. Through opening fractions of :29.3 and 1:00.3, Derf Hanover faced no pressure. But driver J Harris soon sent Veyron after the pacesetter as the field approached three-quarters in 1:29.4.
The pressure proved too high for Derf Hanover, who broke stride off the corner and left Veyron to the lead. From there, the eight-year-old Muscles Yankee gelding kept Power And Grace at bay by one-and-a-quarter lengths while Sizzlen Hot Herbie finished another three lengths behind in third.
Owned by TJS Stable, Veyron won his 17th race from 96 starts, earning $202,958. Paul Cameron conditions the $13.60 winner.
Willyorwonthe later went a wire-to-wire mile to blow his competition away with a 1:59.1 effort in the $10,000 Preferred 3 Trot. Driver Colin Kelly secured command with the eight-year-old Angus Hall gelding from post 2 while pylon-starter Super T settled for the pocket. Setting a clip of :30, 1:00.3 and 1:30.1, Willyorwonthe faced only brief third-quarter pressure from first-over Pollar Hall before scooting from his rivals and hitting the beam five lengths better than Super T. Scene A Magician finished third.
Trained by Kyle Bossence for owners William Brown and Phil Maguire, Willyorwonthe won his 42nd race from 170 starts, earning $381,961. As the 2-5 favourite, he paid $2.80 to win.
