Gabriel Trahan Passes

Trot Insider has learned that Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame member Gabriel Trahan, an all-around horseman that held key roles in multiple arenas of the nation's standardbred racing industry, passed away Wednesday, January 6, just weeks before his 93rd birthday

In Québec, visiting hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8 at the Complexe Funéraire Julien Philibert et Fils, at 1350 rue Ste-Marguerite in Three Rivers.

A funeral will take place Monday, January 11 at the Church of the Navity of Blessed Virgin Mary, Canada Street in Swanton, Vermont, U.S.A.

The visitation In Vermont will take place Sunday, January 10 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue in Swanton.

The entry for Trahan on the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame website starts out by stating, 'a life of harness racing' is the best way to describe Gabe Trahan.

The horseman started his career as an owner-trainer-driver in 1955. He was appointed presiding judge at Piste Laviolette (Trois Rivieres) in 1962.

From 1963 to 1973, Trahan was a supervisor for the Canadian Trotting Association, where his duties included those of a mediator in horsemen's disputes, representative for the CTA at official track openings, and was called upon to train judges across Canada.

In 1972, Trahan was the presiding judge for Canada and the following year he was appointed general manager of Sherbrooke Raceway, a position he held for two years. From 1974 to 1982 he was general manager at Trois Rivieres. He remained active in the industry from 1982 onward, as he implemented the varied talents, experiences and extensive knowledge he gained throughout his career.

In 1986, he acted as a judge. He was also a member of the Canadian Trotting Association’s Rules Committee.
