Ross Shields Passes

Standardbred horse owner and enthusiast Ross Shields of Cambridge, Ont. recently passed away at the McMaster Health Centre at the age of 73 due to complications following surgery

Shields is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and children Mark (Lesley), Karen (Steve), Kathy (Terry), David (Aline), and 'The Kid' Jenne (Jory).

In horse ownership, Shields held the papers -- at one time or another -- on many standout performers, including Storm Girl ($289,371), Compass Connection ($389,529), All The Weapons ($246,289) and Lotteria ($162,495, among others.

Born in Holland Landing, Shields worked with the North York Fire Department for 23 years and Gazzola Paving for 25 years. He was also the CEO of Shields Family Rib-Fest.

The Shields have invited their family and relatives to celebrate the life of Ross during visitation at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews St., Cambridge, Ont., Sunday, January 3, 2010 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and on Monday, January 4, 2010 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the Coutts Chapel on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.
