Sizer Returns To Pompano

The combination of factors such as marking his 50th birthday last month and a prior tenure in South Florida was enough to convince Kevin Sizer to return to the Isle Pompano Park for the 2009-2010 racing season

.

"I'd trained and driven at Pompano Park from 1990 through 1997 but for the past several winters I'd stayed up north, mostly at Dover Downs," Sizer said. "It's really good to be back here. I'm in the midst of a good year after things went well for me for 2009 at Pocono Downs.”

Sizer is the winner of 3,357 races in the bike for over $22 million in purses. On the training side, he's harnessed 204 winners for purse earnings exceeding $4.5 million. His northern home base is Exeter, Pennsylvania. Thus far in 2009 he's reined in 79 winners from 755 starts in the bike.

"I grew up in the business in Kingston, Ontario watching my Dad and my main career influence was the late Ted Huntbach before he moved to the Toronto circuit," he added. "Kingston Park Raceway is long gone but in the day it was a great place to learn. One of my best memories from my hometown track was the day Pat Crowe brought Cam Fella to town but that was over twenty-five years ago. A few years after that I moved permanently to the United States and it was a pretty easy decision to make because in my last year in Montreal I just got tired of those 30 below zero days in the winter."

He turned up in South Florida on the December 23 program and it took Kevin less than a handful of drives to return to the winner's circle at The Isle Pompano Park. He scored a hard fought win last Saturday night with hard hitting veteran Hot Rum after a tense stretch duel with the pocket sitter Monet C C and driver Joe Pavia, Jr.

"The racing here is as tough and competitive as you'll find anywhere and it's a great collection of talent both training and driving here," he added. "Over my career I've strived to reach driving purses of $1 million per year and I did that for a long stretch from 1997 through 2007 without fail. Thanks to the great purses and calibre of racing at Pocono Downs, I'm close that goal again this year. It's time to start another streak like that. I still really enjoy this career and my goal is just to stay consistent and stay in the moment each race out there."
