Zenyatta Voters Take Flak
For the second consecutive year, voting on a high profile horse for an Athlete of the Year award has some people up in arms
.
Last year it was Somebeachsomewhere who made headlines when he was considered, by many, to be a legitimate and worthy contender for the Lou Marsh Award – an honour doled out annually to Canada’s top athlete.
The multi-talented standardbred was instead denied consideration as a result of a law that was passed during the voting by Committee Chair Silken Laumann. The law stipulated the award would only be given to human athletes.
In an article published today on cbc.ca, people that cast a vote for Zenyatta in the balloting for this year’s Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year are on the hot seat.
The undefeated mare who finished the year with arguably one of the greatest performances in the history of the Breeders Cup - and all of thoroughbred racing for that matter – ranked second in this year’s voting behind tennis sensation Serena Williams.
