Trotting Records Fall In Charlottetown

Hop Up solidified herself as the greatest trotting mare in the history of Atlantic Canadian harness racing as she rewrote the record books again Thursday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

In line to Corey MacPherson, the daughter of Tad The Stud cut out all the fractions in the $2,500 Open Trot and hung on for a 1:57.1 Charlottetown track record and Atlantic Canadian record for aged trot mares. The trip lowered the previous record of 1:57.2 set by Osprey Impact in 2016.

Keith Campbell of Victoria West trains and owns Hop Up, who is an 18-time winner that crowned herself the fastest Maritime Bred mare ever on the Eastern Seaboard last month in Charlottetown.

Mabou Ridge declared victory in the lone $10,000 PEI Colt Stakes three-year-old trot class off a pocket ride behind tempo setter Tequila Tuesday (Driven by Myles Heffernan) in a 1:58.3 new lifetime best for the son of Armbro Barrister.

Clare MacDonald was in the driver’s seat behind her trainee for owner Arnold Rankin of Antigonish, NS. The trip shaved one-fifth of a second off the three-year-old track trotting record for geldings set by Waiting On A Woman in 2011.

In two-year-old PEI Colt Stakes action, Dusty Lane Milo finally got the better of Mr Finlay Ridge to snap the latter’s win streak in 2:04.1 in their $6,000 division.

It was the third straight score for Dusty Lane Milo and driver Adam Merner, trainer Ron Gass and owner Marsha Knox of Stanhope.

A Little Go Go claimed the other $6,000 rookie trot split in 2:02.4 for trainer-driver Marc Campbell and owner Grayland Farm of Gulf Shore, NS.

It was one of four winners on the program for Campbell as he also tasted victory with Filly Forty Seven in 1:57 from his own stable as well as Better Be In Love in 1:57.4 for trainer Brendan Mullen and Setting Day in a new personal best of 1:59.1 from the Mike McGuigan stable.

Trainer Tom Weatherbie celebrated a pair of wins as Doctor Sunshine made a maiden score of 1:58.2 for driver Mark Bradley and Temagami Seelster won her fourth straight in a seasonal best of 1:55.3 with Brodie MacPhee at the controls.
