Sorella Strolls At Mohawk
With the finals for the Canadian Trotting Classic and Elegantimage slated for next weekend, Hambletonian Oaks champ Sorella went a prep mile on Tuesday (Sept. 8) when winning the $30,000 featured trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Sent the odds-on favourite, Sorella sat fourth to a :27 first quarter set by Perfetto, who soon yielded command to Im The Muscle moving for the backstretch. Mass Fortune K then angled off the pegs from third and brushed to the lead by a :55.1 half while Sorella stayed put at the pylons.
Perfetto pulled out of the third into the far turn to mount another bid for lead heading to three-quarters. Driver Yannick Gingras spun Sorella three wide approaching three-quarters in 1:24 and rolled towards Mass Fortune K turning for the finish. From there the Muscle Hill filly kicked to a two-and-a-quarter length win in 1:52 with Perfetto holding third another two lengths behind.
Trained by Nancy Takter for owners Elmer Fannin, Crawford Farms Racing and Brent Fannin, Sorella won her sixth race from eight starts this season and her eighth from 17 overall, earning $567,085. She paid $2.70 to win.
